Love Poem Number 137
by María José

You always get up way earlier than I do
Every morning I hear your foot steps to the kitchen
You put Bustelo in the grueca and when it’s done
You drink it naked, contemplating
Meditating alone on the couch
Crosslegged. Your “you” time.

Sometimes I get up too.
I love watching you wash the yellow coffee mug
Your back to me
Your butt is my favorite morning view
The sun shines on it through the window by the sink
You wear the red rubber gloves as you soap down
The dirty mug with warm running water
I want to ravage you
Over the sink
Over a mountain in South America
Over a picket fence in White suburbia

I come up behind you and put my arms around your waist as you wash
The ceramic edges of your cup
And i kiss your beautiful back
And press my cheek against it
“I love you so much” I whisper
And then let go and grab the closest thing lying around that isn’t sharp

I grab the stainless steel spatula
and spank you with it
Three times
Hard enough to leave a pastel pink mark and make a loud clap
but soft enough to make you laugh as you shake your head and laugh again
It’s our little tradition.

Spatula
wooden spoon
palm
new book
takeout chopsticks
French baguette
I want to spank you and love you a million times
For a million mornings
With a million little things
Full of a million little laughs.
